March 28 , 2012 Aim: How do we calculate the Surface Area of cylinders?

Cylinders:

http://www.mathwarehouse.com/solid-geometry/cylinder/images/picture-cyinder-formula-area.jpg

Examples:

Example 1: If r = 6 ft and h = 4 ft, then the surface area would be
  SA = 2(3.14)(6 ft)2 + 2(3.14)(6 ft)(4 ft) = 2(3.14)(36 ft2) + 2(3.14)(24 ft2) = 226.08 ft2 + 150.72 ft2 = 376.8 ft2.
Example 2: If r = 5 cm and h = 2 cm, then the surface area would be
  SA = 2(3.14)(5 cm)2 + 2(3.14)(5 cm)(2 cm) = 2(3.14)(25 cm2) + 2(3.14)(10 cm2) = 157 cm2+ 62.8 cm2 = 219.8 cm2.

Now you try it:
1.

Find the surface area of a can which is 60 mm tall and has a diameter of 32mm, to the nearest mm.
(let pi = 3.14)

 A. 3140 sq. mm
 B. 7636 sq. mm
 C. 3141 sq. mm
 D. 7637 sq. mm

2.

A quarter is really a very short cylinder.  It's height is about 1 mm, and it's diameter is about 24 mm.  Find the surface area of a quarter.
let pi = 3.14

 A. 979.68 sq. mm
 B. 904 sq. mm
 C. 200.96 sq. mm
 D.765.56 sq. mm
